Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, located in south-western Uganda, occupies an area of 38.6 sq km. Mgahinga is part of a larger ecosystem, the Virunga Conservation Area, which also includes two adjacent parks, one in Rwanda and the other in The Congo. This park is also the home of the rare Golden Monkey,The 3 conical, extinct volcanoes is the most striking feature of Mgahinga Park itself. The slopes of these 3 northern Virunga volcanoes are the home of the local healers, whose folklore has spread throughout the region.
Gorilla Tracking remains the most popular activity here though it is dependent on the seasonal movements of the habituated groups. As in Bwindi, obtaining permits in advance is necessary and Visit Gorillas Uganda Safaris will happily make those arrangements for their clients. In addition, Birding is very popular in the park, particularly in the gorge between Mt. Gahinga and Sabinyo, through the bamboo forest and in the montane forest. Also small populations of elephant, leopard, buffalo and black and white colobus monkeys are present, which allows some interesting entertainment for the Hikers and those on the Nature Walks.
