Chimpanzee trekking experience is an exhilarating adventure that allows the visitors to experience into the forest in search of our closet living relatives. Chimpanzee trekking starts early in the morning at the park headquarters explaining to the visitors about the rules and regulations to follow during chimpanzee trekking experience by the skilled and experienced park guides and park rangers. After the briefing you will be grouped in various groups of 6 people per group and then assigned to the skilled rangers that are familiar with the park trails. As you trek the deep into the forest, the thrill of the search builds, you will be rewarded with the sighting of the incredible biodiversity in the park that includes various bird species, primate species like L’Hoest’s monkeys, black and white monkeys, and various butterflies and among others.

And once the chimpanzees are spotted you will be awarded with the opportunity to be in the presence of the chimpanzees for one hour that’s when you will watch the chimpanzee doing their daily activities including watching the chimpanzees playing, watching the chimpanzees breastfeeding, watching the female chimpanzees grooming their young ones, watching the chimpanzees climbing and among others, taking their pictures and recording their videos. After the one hour of the experience you will trek back to the starting point, and that’s where you will be awarded with the chimpanzee trekking certificates for taking part in chimpanzee trek.

In Uganda, Chimpanzee trekking is carried out in different locations, and each offers some of the best chimpanzee trekking experiences. Chimpanzee trekking is done in Kibale National Park, Kaniyo Pabidi Forest, Budongo Forest in Murchison Falls National Park, Kyambura Gorge in Queen Elizabeth national park, Kalinzu Forest and Ngamba Island. Kibale Forest National Park is the best and home to the largest habituated chimpanzee population and it is home to over 1500 chimpanzees and 13 different primate species.

Similarly, for more experience the visitors go to Kibale Forest National park for the chimpanzee habituation experience that involves the visitors to spend more time with the chimpanzees that is approximately four hours with the group of the scientists, researches, conservationists and among others, this experience that’s when the chimpanzees are trained to be used to the human presence. Chimpanzee habituation is more detailed and thus it provides the visitors an opportunity to spend time with these attractive creatures from the time they get out from their nests in the morning to the time they make nests of their next nights.

Cost of a Chimpanzee Trekking Permit

The cost of the trekking permits in Uganda differs depending on the chimpanzee destination you have chosen. The cost is also determined depending on the category of tourists you belong to and these are foreign non-residents, foreign residents and EAC citizens. The cost of the chimpanzee permit in Kibale is $250 for foreign non-residents, $200 for foreign residents and UGX180,000 for EAC citizens. The cost of the chimp permit in Kyambura is $100 for foreign non-residents, $80 for foreign residents and UGX50,000 for EAC citizens. The cost of the chimp trek permit in Kalinzu forest is $130 for foreign non-residents, $65 for foreign residents and $65 for East African citizens. The cost of a chimpanzee trek permit in Budongo forest is $230 for foreign non-residents, $120 for foreign residents and $85 for EAC citizens.

How do I book a Chimpanzee Trekking Permit

Chimpanzee trekking permits in Uganda are easily bought from the Uganda Wildlife Authority through a trusted tour operator like Gorilla sights. We will help you with checking for the availability of the permits, book and purchase them on your behalf. You need to first come up with the dates you wish to trek chimpanzees and communicate with the tour operator about the dates and the number of permits you want to purchase. You will also be required to submit personal information like passport number, a copy of the passport, and nationality. Once the permits are available, you are required to make the necessary payments for the permits, and the permits will be purchased and a copy sent to you for record purposes.
